Exploring Blue Carbon: UCo Faculty Chat with Dr. Kendall Valentine

As apart of their yearly goals, the Program on Climate Change (PCC) Undergraduate Cohort (UCo) strived to connect more with members of the PCC community and their research. Acting on this, UCo hosted their first Faculty Chat on Thursday April 24th. For this undergrad-centric talk, the group welcomed Dr. Kendall Valentine, a coastal geomorphologist and an Assistant Professor in the School of Oceanography at UW.

As Earth’s atmosphere, land, and oceans heat and host increasing amounts of fossil carbon, humanity struggles with one of the biggest challenges of our time, anthropogenic climate change.  This struggle is ever more apparent at every level of society.  How we address this challenge will determine our future as well as that of many species on the planet. Yet, according to the Yale Climate Opinion Survey results of 2023, over 60% of us in the U.S.

In striving to gain strength as an undergraduate climate community, this Autumn quarter has been eventful for the PCC Undergraduate Cohort (UCo). Heading into this academic year, we built on our strength as a Registered Student Organization (RSO) and set our focus on hosting more events. Our goals were to further build an undergraduate community and plan events focused on the interests and energies of the members.

UCo: Grad School Explained Panel

The PCC Undergraduate Cohort (UCo) hosted a “Grad School Explained” session on the afternoon of Monday, April 29th, 2024. This event was formed to supply undergraduate students interested in climate grad school with the opportunity to learn more about the process and connect with current climate grad students to ask questions.  Hosted in the Life Sciences Building, the event began with Pagliacci pizza and time to socialize with fellow undergrads.

Join the Program on Climate Change Undergraduate Cohort for a dual event on April 29th— the City Nature Challenge & Graduate School Panel. This Earth Month, the Program on Climate Change (PCC) and UW Biology experts are excited to bring the global City Nature Challenge to the UW on Monday, April 29th, 11:00am-1:00pm! Contribute to a worldwide citizen science initiative by documenting wild flora and fauna on iNaturalist and explore the rich biodiversity of our campus.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a dream employer for many climate-minded undergrads. And yet, understanding the processes involved in finding and applying for these federal positions can be a daunting task. Pathways to Climate Careers: The Undergraduate Cohort Career Panel

Climate Sciences is a growing field seeing expansion in both educational and career pathways. This growth is seen within UW as more and more students partake in climate change courses, programs, and research. As education in environmental and climate sciences expands, knowing where to take a climate education beyond college is important. To address this, UCo, The PCC’s Undergraduate Cohort, hosted the “Careers in Climate Panel.” The panel, hosted on the evening of Tuesday, February 13th, featured professionals currently working in climate-focused careers, including UW and PCC alumni.

Tips from the Undergrad Cohort: How to Find Climate Science Research

UW is known for its wide array of research experiences. Yet, as an undergraduate, actually finding and securing these opportunities can be difficult, especially if you don’t already have contacts, past experience, or advanced knowledge of where to look. To address this issue, the PCC Undergraduate Cohort (UCo) annually endeavors to make tips and resources more available, through a seminar/panel titled “How to Get Involved in Climate Science Research as an Undergraduate.” The information session, held on 11/7, featured details on research at UW, how to find it, and even advice from current undergrads engaged in research, and intended to provide everything you need to know about undergraduate climate science research.
