Pathways to Climate Careers: The Undergraduate Cohort Career Panel

Climate Sciences is a growing field seeing expansion in both educational and career pathways. This growth is seen within UW as more and more students partake in climate change courses, programs, and research. As education in environmental and climate sciences expands, knowing where to take a climate education beyond college is important. To address this, UCo, The PCC’s Undergraduate Cohort, hosted the “Careers in Climate Panel.” The panel, hosted on the evening of Tuesday, February 13th, featured professionals currently working in climate-focused careers, including UW and PCC alumni.

Tips from the Undergrad Cohort: How to Find Climate Science Research

UW is known for its wide array of research experiences. Yet, as an undergraduate, actually finding and securing these opportunities can be difficult, especially if you don’t already have contacts, past experience, or advanced knowledge of where to look. To address this issue, the PCC Undergraduate Cohort (UCo) annually endeavors to make tips and resources more available, through a seminar/panel titled “How to Get Involved in Climate Science Research as an Undergraduate.” The information session, held on 11/7, featured details on research at UW, how to find it, and even advice from current undergrads engaged in research, and intended to provide everything you need to know about undergraduate climate science research.

The Undergraduate Cohort: Back and Bigger Than Ever

As we enter the Program on Climate Change Undergraduate Cohort‘s (UCo) third official year, it is amazing to reflect on how far we have come. What began simply as an interest survey has now blossomed into a Cohort of students dedicated to sharing, learning, and developing together into a new, informed generation of climate scientists at the University of Washington. That newfound connection was underscored at the UCo’s kickoff meeting, on 9/26, which drew over 40 attendees from across the college and university.

PCC Undergraduate Cohort Hosts Professional Development Workshop!

Although tourists were flocking to the Quad to see the Sakura trees in bloom on a gorgeously sunny day, members of the PCC Undergraduate Cohort were there for a different reason. During a sunny afternoon on 4/2, the UCo gathered on the third floor of Smith Hall, a room with a lovely aerial view of the cherry blossoms that certainly enhanced the atmosphere of the professional development workshop they were hosting.

PCC Undergraduate Cohort: Welcome to a New Year!

On the 27th of September, 2022, the PCC Undergraduate Cohort (UCo) hosted their first event of the new academic year. UCo leaders welcomed new undergrads, explained how UCo and the Climate Science Minor are situated in the Program on Climate Change, and promoted community through fun, games, and food! This was a great opening event, laying the groundwork for emerging climate scientists to connect with each other, with professionals, and with leadership opportunities.

On Thursday, February 24th, the PCC Undergraduate Cohort held its Winter Quarter meeting, focusing on sharing and discussing stories of climate hope. We are constantly inundated with discouraging news surrounding the state of the environment and the future of climate change, and while it is important to remember that the climate crisis is certainly a crisis, it is not one without moments of hope, success, and inspiration.

PCC Undergraduate Cohort: Finding Research Opportunities

The PCC Undergraduate Cohort hosted its first official event on November 18, 2021! The event aimed to inform climate-minded undergraduates about why they should get involved with research here at the UW, how to look for open positions, and how to apply for a research position once one is found. There was both a seminar-style presentation and a Q & A panel with current College of the Environment undergraduates who have gotten research positions in the past, providing lots of practical advice to the over two dozen interested undergrads who attended!
