We are pleased to announce the 15th Annual Graduate Climate Conference (GCC), which will be held virtually October 29 – 31, 2021. The GCC is an interdisciplinary conference run by graduate students, for graduate students. The organizers of GCC strive to feature a diverse representation of students and research topics to create a broader, more inclusive community for emerging leaders in climate-related fields.

This past Earth Day (April 22nd) PCC Director Becky Alexander and Dr. Jeremy Hess of UW Medicine were interviewed for “3 Ways Climate Change Affects Your Health” produced by the UW Medicine digital publication, Right As Rain. The article touches on the three things climate is changing; more frequent and extreme weather events, snow and ice melt, ocean acidification and higher sea level, but primarily focuses on how climate change affects our health.

The recent violence targeting Asians, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders reflects the deepening of many of the divisions and increasing acts of violence that have arisen since the pandemic began. Six of the eight killed in the Atlanta-area shootings were of Asian descent and seven of them were women. As an organization that promotes and celebrates community and inclusion, the UW Program on Climate Change (UW PCC) stands with the University of Washington and educational institutions across the country to decry recent and racially motivated attacks.

We often refer to an “academic bubble” filled with researchers, professors, and students, like ourselves, who are isolated from the broader communities they inhabit. Importantly, academic research objectives don’t always align with the immediate, actionable priorities of these wider communities. While the extent to which “academic bubbles” exist can be debated, there is undoubtedly room for improvement in conducting meaningful engagement and research in partnership with communities.

In these challenging times, PCC recognizes the disproportionate impacts of the pandemic and climate change on black and brown communities and cultures around the world. Disproportionate impacts are fueled by systemic racism exemplified by the recent killing of unarmed African Americans in the United States. While recent protests here in Seattle and around the country make such inequities especially apparent now, we realize that these inequities represent the everyday lives of racial minorities now and have for generations.

The PCC in partnership with JISAO announce a new interdisciplinary graduate fellowship opportunity to begin in fall 2020. This fellowship will support one or more students with a clear passion for working across academic boundaries on projects grounded in climate science broadly considered. The applicants will submit a written proposal for research that would not be possible without this funding, and that builds collaboration across disciplines.
