Recap of the 11th Annual Winter Welcome
On Wednesday, February 26th, the PCC community gathered for the 11th annual Winter Welcome. The evening started in the Fisheries Auditorium with introductions and updates from PCC director, Becky Alexander. We welcomed new community members and briefly learned a bit more about them. Additional updates included recognition of the 2024 Graubard Fellows and the announcement of the new Research Accelerator RFP.
Becky then handed it off to GSR Mariah Rubin, who shared on P-GraSC and their current restructuring. The grad students had just hosted their first Third Thursday event, a community happy hour at the UW Greenhouse. After the success of their first event, they are looking forward to coming together for this event again in the coming months. The Undergraduate Cohort followed with updates on their recent activities and their plans for the upcoming quarter. They are focusing their energy on Faculty/Grad Student chats and ecological restoration projects. They are looking for collaborators and ideas and would love your input. More information, including updates and lightning talks, are included in the event slides at the end of this post.
Closing out the presentation, new postdocs and researchers gave quick lightning talks, introducing themselves and their work. This gave the community an opportunity to get to know the new members and many of the speakers invited future collaboration. Lightning Talk Presenters included:
- Camille Henkel (ATMOS/CICOES)
- Haruki Hirasawa (ATMOS)
- Rui Jin (CICOES)
- Aditya Khuller (APL)
- Xinyu Li (CICOES/PMEL)
- Matt Luongo (CICOES/PMEL)
- Chan-Pang Ng (ATMOS)
- Daniel Sandborn (OCEAN/CICOES/PMEL)
- Man-Yin Tsang (OCEAN)
The Winter Welcome wrapped up in the lobby of the Fisheries Science Building with time to socialize with friends and colleagues. Catered appetizers and drinks were enjoyed in good company as conversation filled the hall.
Alongside this year’s Winter Welcome, we looked forward to the Summer Institute by voting on the theme. This year’s theme contenders were “Paleoclimate constraints on future climate”, “Climate extremes and attribution science”, and “PNW climate change and impacts”. The votes were close but “Paleoclimate constraints on future climate” was the winner. Although paleoclimate work has been an important piece in many past sessions, this is the first time it has been a core theme of the Summer Institute.
The 2025 PCC Summer Institute will be held at Friday Harbor Labs, September 10th through the 12th. More information including speakers and registration to come, check the Summer Institute page for updates.
