At The Sea Ice Edge: Upcoming art + science collaboration event

“At The Sea Ice Edge” is an art + science collaboration with artist Jill Pelto designed to highlight research from NASA’s SASSIE (Salinity and Stratification at the Sea Ice Edge) project. In collaboration with members of the SASSIE science team, Jill has created a series of four paintings that convey the science of SASSIE and the impact of climate change on the Arctic, with each piece directly incorporating environmental data.

Upcoming Event: Walker-Ames Public Lecture with Fiamma Straneo on 10/19

On Tuesday, October 19th, at 7:30 P.M., Professor Fiamma Straneo, co-Director of the Polar Center at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego, and UW Oceanography alumni will be giving a public lecture in 120 Kane Hall, here at the UW! Her talk, “Ahoy! Glacier ahead: an oceanographer’s journey to the edge of the ice,” is part of the Walker-Ames Lecture Series, and will detail her quest to overcome the obstacles preventing the full understanding of how ice sheets respond to warming climates by utilizing “a collaborative, team science effort which spans across the natural sciences and engineering and includes local, indigenous knowledge.” Straneo’s research, which involved everything from helicopters to snow mobiles, brought her to the edge of glaciers, and in the end, enabled the development of improved climate models, and will be a crucial tool in the collaborative effort to understand our changing seas.

Intersection of climate change and human health: PCC Winter Seminar Series videos now posted

A collection of recordings from the Winter 2021 PCC 586 Seminar Series is now available on our website, and Youtube (attached below). The UW Program on Climate Change (PCC) and Center for Health and the Global Environment (CHanGE) organized a seminar series in Winter 2021 that focused on the intersection of climate change and human health. The goal for this series was to bring together researchers in the two communities to discuss how climate change has and will impact human health.

Climate and Environmental Justice Course Development Workshop-Winter 2021

The Program on Climate Change and the Program on the Environment, with additional support from the College of the Environment, are sponsoring a Climate and Environmental Justice course development workshop during winter quarter 2021 led by Dr. Heather Price. The interactive, results-driven workshop will consist of four 1.5-2 hour meetings spread over winter quarter. Faculty participants will have the opportunity to gain both content and pedagogical experience in service of tuning their course(s) towards inclusion of Climate/Environmental Justice topics, with time for feedback and interaction from the instructor and colleagues.
