Undergraduate Opportunities

A primary goal of the UCo is to connect undergraduates with opportunities, whether academic, research, or otherwise! As such, below is a list of opportunities and resources for climate-minded undergrads to begin their professional journey. If you have undergraduate opportunities to share, let us know!

Check the Environmental Academic Opportunities Board!

Education

  • Climate Science Minor [all undergraduates]: If you are interested in learning about climate change from a more academic perspective, look into the UW Climate Science Minor, an interdisciplinary, personalizable investigation into Climate Science!

Miller Young Scientist Scholarship is for undergraduate and graduate students in geo-environmental sciences or engineering. This scholarship is for students who exhibit an interest and academic potential in fields related to Earth science. One $2000 scholarship is awarded each year to a student who demonstrates an ability to leverage their scientific education to benefit society. Application open January 3 – March 27

Internships

PNW-Based:

  • EarthLab Summer Internship Program [all undergraduates]: The 9-week paid-internship projects will focus on transdisciplinary experiences at the intersection of climate change and social justice. Cohort model allows for the opportunity to meet with, network and attend EarthLab coordinated training and events with other interns, as well as regular meetings with mentors.
  • CEBR summer program with CEI [all undergraduates]: This summer internship provides authentic research in solar, energy storage, grid technologies, and systems integration under the mentorship of UW’s world-class faculty and grad students. Students gain research experience in nationally recognized labs, prepare for graduate school, network with peers and research professionals, receive mentoring from top faculty, create potentially publishable work, receive a competitive stipend and restitution for travel and housing, and may be eligible to receive academic credit and attend professional conferences. Application due February 15.
  • CICOES Research Internship for Undergraduates [all undergraduates]: As a CICOES research intern you will work closely with a mentor, often within the context of a research team, to conduct a research project related to you specific interests. Students will receive a stipend of $600 per week ($6,000 for the summer). Application due January 31, 2025.
  • DINO Summer Internship Program [all undergraduates]: APL’s DINO program provides undergrads the opportunity to experience and conduct research, participate in professional development, build community with young scientists and learn to navigate a career in maritime and oceanographic science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). Interns receive a stipend of $6000, housing, and limited travel expenses. Application due February 28, 2025.
  • ISB Summer Internship Program [all undergraduates]: This 10-week program emerges student in research at the Institute for System Biology under a wide array of projects.
