Funding Opportunities

The Program on Climate Change has always been committed to ensuring that members of our community can directly further climate science and solutions. With the help of our generous donors, we are happy to offer a variety of funding opportunities that will be used to continually uphold this commitment.

Funding Opportunities

PCC Climate Solutions Project Fund: (RFP updated April 2024)

  • Purpose: “To support graduate students engaged in the Program on Climate Change in applying their climate-science knowledge to solutions-based projects, capstone programs, and outreach efforts with community organizations and partners to help them gain experience outside academia.”
  • The PCC is accepting proposals from graduate students engaged in the PCC for “Climate Solutions Projects” that either help them gain experience outside academia while applying their climate-science knowledge to solutions-based projects that benefit a community, or that communicate climate change related information to broad audiences.
  • Eligibility: Currently matriculated students in a graduate program at the UW who are working on a community-led or community-based project related to climate science or climate solutions.
  • Application Requirements:
    • A one paragraph description of the planned use of funding that includes:
      • Rationale for workshop or other training, community engagement, etc.
      • Project participants and collaborators
      • Project dates and approximate timeline
      • Budget justification
      • Expected impact on community
    • An itemized budget for a maximum amount of $5K per project
    • Letter of interest from community collaborator (if appropriate)
  • Deadline: There is no deadline for proposals. Applications are accepted at any time and should be submitted to Miriam Bertram at uwpcc@uw.edu.

Graubard Fellowship in the Program on Climate Change (updated Sept.  22, 2025):

The Graubard Fellowship in the Program on Climate Change, funded by Katherine Graubard and William Calvin, will support approximately six students working on climate science research (broadly defined) towards a PhD degree. Proposals for 1-2 quarters (3-6 months) of support (0.5 FTE) to be used by the end of Summer 2026 will be considered.

Eligibility: Students currently matriculated in a graduate program at the UW who have passed their General Exam by the application deadline and have a demonstrated need for support to advance to graduation. Students from any program are invited to apply, with priority given to those in departments active in the PCC. Priority will be given to students who are on track to graduate by the end of Summer 2026.

Application deadline: Noon on October 6, 2025 (email applications to uwpcc@uw.edu with Subject line: Graubard2025_Student Last Name)

Application Requirements (see detailed instructions):

  1. Student’s academic transcript from the UW
  2. Student’s CV including a list of publications, date of General Exam, and estimated date of degree completion
  3. 1–2-page research proposal written by the student
  4. A budget narrative from the student’s PhD advisor(s)
  5. Letter of recommendation from the student’s PhD advisor(s)
  6. A list of current and pending support from the student’s PhD advisor(s)

Additional Instructions and Important Details 


The Climate Science Research Acceleration Fund (updated February 2025):

  • Purpose: “To support broad-based climate research being conducted through the Program on
    Climate Change that is grounded in climate science. It is the Donors’ intent that funds benefit
    any undergraduate and graduate students, post-docs, research scientists and faculty pursuing
    climate sciences research through the Program on Climate Change.”
  • Eligibility: UW faculty, UW research scientists and UW Postdoctoral Researchers from any program are invited to apply. Priority will be given to those in departments active in the PCC who have not received funding in the past. Postdocs may apply but funds must be used prior to leaving UW.
  • Application Requirements:
    • Title
    • PI and co-PI names, affiliations, titles
    • Proposed research is limited to 3 pages (see instructions in full RFP)
    • Brief budget narrative (see instructions in full RFP)
    • Funding start date (must be on or before Dec. 1, 2025)
    • Letter(s) of collaboration from unfunded collaborators (if applicable)
  • Deadline: 5pm on June 1, 2025
