Climate Science Communication Workshop

Following on the September PCC Summer Institute “Extreme Events and their Attribution to Climate Change,” the Program on Climate Change is hosting a related science communication workshop–Communication Hazards: Causes and Consequences of Extreme Events–on Thursday November 19 from 3:30-5pm in Life Sciences Building Room 401.  Sign-up is required, as only 30 seats are available.  UW graduate students are our primary target audience, with some space for interested postdocs, and fewer spots for others.  This event will be Led by Dr. Heather Galindo.

Communication Hazards: Causes and Consequences of Extreme Events
The science linking climate change to extreme natural events is complex and nuanced…and yet most people outside of the scientific community are looking for clear and simple answers. Is this hurricane or wildfire caused by climate change? Yes or no? In this short workshop, we will spend time exploring some of the contexts in which these questions are asked and how to give clear (and still accurate) answers. While there is no magic solution, practicing intentional communication through preparation and role-playing can increase the relevance of your answers and decrease stress in high-pressure interview situations.

Dr. Heather Galindo is an Associate Teaching Professor at UW Bothell where she teaches courses in Biology, Earth System Science, and Scientific Writing. Before coming to UWB as full-time faculty in 2015, she spent five years as the Assistant Director of Science for a small non-profit connecting environmental scientists to journalists and policymakers – particularly within the ocean acidification scientific community.

This registration form will close at noon on Thursday November 12.
