PCC Stewardship of Climate Research Gift at UW

From the Interim Director, LuAnne Thompson

The Program on Climate Change is the steward of three gifts that are making a difference for University of Washington graduate students and Assistant Professors studying climate and climate change from a variety of perspectives.

Six graduate students will receive support from these awards; these students are enrolled in programs across campus including the School of Oceanography, the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences, the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, and the Biology Department. These students will be focusing their research on the impact of climate change on both the natural environment and the people that are impacted as well as charting a potential future for the planet in a decarbonized future. The titles of these projects are listed below:

  • Projections into Snow-mediated Habitat Selection for Carnivores and Ungulates in the Northeast Cascades
  • Predicting the Spatio-temporal Evolution of Marine Heatwaves
  • Exploring Climate Impacts of Low Energy Demand Scenarios
  • Predicting smoke exposure tradeoffs among forest restoration scenarios in the Sierra Nevada, CA
  • Mapping the REAL Road to Decarbonization with Realistic Carbon Cycle Feedbacks
  • Experimentally induced timing mismatches in multi-species pollination systems

Two additional projects will support the research of three Assistant Professors (School of Marine and Environmental Affairs, School of Environmental and Forest Sciences, and the Department of Landscape Architecture). One project will use a collaborative approach for co-production of knowledge on the impact of climate change on an Inuit population in the Arctic. The second will design and host a workshop with the goal of building a climate change maladaptation research community that spans departments across the University of Washington campuses.

We are currently looking to fund 12-15 student-led climate solutions projects!  Submit on a rolling deadline a short project justification for a <$5K budget.
